Deaerator Retrofits, Upgrades and Services
Besides the delivery of new deaerators, Stork Thermeq also serves their clients by retrofitting traytype deaerators into the Stork Spray Type deaerator.
The reason for retrofitting the existing deaerator can be:
- Increasing the capacity of the deaerator due to an increased demand for boiler feed water;
- High operating and maintenance costs due to high steam losses and frequent damage to the internals;
- Unsatisfactory deaerator performance (highO2).
The retrofit can be planned within a few days, including changes to the steam and condensate piping. The work can be done under supervision of Stork in cooperation with local companies.
Work
In most cases, a tray-type deaerator is made up of two main parts, the horizontal storage tank with on top of it the actual deaerator. The Stork SprayType Deaerator has the deaerating and storage function integrated into one vessel. When a tray-type deaerator is retrofitted, only the storage vessel is reused.
The retrofit mainly consists of:
- Removal of the tray-type deaerator vessel;
- Mounting of the Stork condensate sprayer (for pre-deaeration);
- Installation of internals (steam distribution pipes) into tank (for final deaeration).
Depending on the situation at hand, the installation of the internals can be done in different ways. The internals can be brought inside the deaerator through the manhole in parts and welded together inside the deaerator. In other cases, one vessel head is completely removed and the internals are taken inside the deaerator completely prefabricated. Afterwards the vessel head is welded back on the deaerator.
Project
The pictures below give an impression of a retrofit carried out at a paper mill of Södra Cell in Sweden.

Tray-type deaerator before the retrofit

After retrofit to Stork Spray-Type Deaerator
The installation of a new paper mill and consequently higher boiler feed water capacity, required a new deaerator or a retrofit of the storage vessel to a Stork Spray Type Deaerator.
As a retrofit was the most favourable solution both looking at investment and delivery time, the client choose for a retrofit. The capacity of the deaerator was increased with approximately 50 %.
The complete retrofit including engineering and prefabrication took 2 months. The actual work on the deaerator was done in 5 days during a scheduled 2 week stop.
