New Generation Burners: An enormous leap forward.


At Stork Thermeq, the joint effort of the engineering, manufacturing and service department and supervised by our Senior Combustion Engineer, Dr. Ir. Marco Derksen, has created a revolutionary burner . The development of a burner that creates the possibility of 10 to 60 milligram NOx emissions without the need of boiler modifications or for example flue gas recirculation.

Stork Thermeq, has a long trajectory of experience in the supply of Low NOx burners, and this is a new concept that features lower emissions, easier to regulate and also inexpensive to install. It is designed to meet the strictest standards currently in force, whereby we achieve the absolute minimum. As result, we can burn gas with NOx emissions of as little as 10 milligrams with negligible CO formation at 1% O2.

One of the advantages that Stork Thermeq has; is that we can achieve much lower emissions in existing situations without the need of a variety of additional features that the competition use. This is very useful for existing installations who want to benefit from the new generation burner.

Swirl-Flash: Gas Turbine Power Augmentation and NOx reduction: More power, less pollution.

SwirlFlash® technology is the state of the art water injection technology for gas turbine power augmentation and NOx reduction. SwirlFlash® is superior to any other design in creating small droplets. Where swirl or impact nozzles can reach an average droplet size of 25 μm, the SwirlFlash nozzle creates droplets with an average size of 3 μm.

The SwirlFlash principle was discovered during research on steam spray cooling systems. When the spray water temperature was raised above a certain temperature, the shape of the spray changed dramatically. This effect can be explained by the fact that flashing occurs in the droplets as they leave the nozzle and the pressure is reduced. The steam generated by flashing causes the droplets to “explode”. This results in a radial velocity of part of the droplets, causing the base of the spray pattern to be wider. Further down stream the sprayer, the spray bundle is smaller. This is caused by the fact that the very small droplets rapidly lose their relative velocity to the air flow. The normal operating condition for the Swirlflash system is a pressure of 130 bar and a temperature of 180 C.

Innovative Solutions: Harbin Turbine Works in China


Harbin Turbine in China had a problem with deaeration in a totally different spot in his installation than usual - that is, close to the condenser. Without solution, the company passed the problem to a Chinese Institute of Design. Without success, this last one sent the problem to us.

Even though we have the knowledge and the experience, at the very beginning we did not understand the problem either. It was needed to meet our customer face to face. Once we sit together with Harbin Turbine, within 5 minutes it was clear what the problem was. The same day our engineers draw the solution. Our solution was applicable to their original plans, causing not costs.

The situation was as follows: At Stork Thermeq we have a lot of experience in deaerators under high pressure. What was needed was to have a deaerator under very low pressure. A very unique solution. Harbin Turbine are very satisfied with the solution and the trust in our company has increased enormously. This has created more others for Stork Thermeq’s products from the Chinese company

The solution to this problem was the origin of a new product!

Creativity Session for stimulating future success

Creativity is the ability to see something in a new way, to see and solve problems no one else may know exists, and to engage in mental and physical experiences that are new, unique, or different

At Stork Thermeq we are absolutely convinced that creativity is essential for prolonging our success. Therefore we have organized a creativity session to develop new product market combinations and new potential areas to be developed.

Many of engineering, sales and service people within Stork Thermeq joined the two creativity sessions where everyone could share their imagination, creativity and knowledge. In an enthusiastic environment, many new ideas and applications were born. Some were smashing and can easily be adapted on short term and some need more investigation and development.

HoSt and Stork Thermeq biomass boiler with 100% energy utilization.


HoSt is an engineers firm that specializes in energy-related processes and is a leading company in the industrial energy conservation area and biomass energy systems. One of its latest development is the creation of a revolutionary biomass boiler that allows 100% energy utilization. This new development has been done in close relation between HoSt and Stork Thermeq.

This boiler is extremely important, since electricity is becoming ever more expensive in Europe, and sustainable energy, which includes biomass, is playing an greater role in the generation of power.

Normal (large) plants that burn biomass achieve a power yield of around 30%, with 70% of the energy escaping to the air. We achieve a power yield of 22 to 25%, but utilize all the heat, giving us yields of 100%.

The plant built with Stork Thermeq generates 1 megawatt of power and 3 megawatts of high-value heat (70-80 degrees) and about 1.5 megawatt (1500 households) of low-value heat (50-60 degrees). The largest plants will produce 4 megawatts (4000 households) of power."
